Mission Operations Days: 2002/082 to 2002/088
March 23, 2002 00:00:00 GMT to March 29, 2002 00:00:00 GMT

The Terra spacecraft was autonomously put into Safe Mode on Tuesday, March 19, 2002, (2002/078) at 16:10:49 GMT. As a result, MODIS was also put into Safe Mode which turns off nearly all instrument components and closes the nadir and space view doors.

Terra returned to Normal Mode on Wednesday, March 20th, 2002 (2002/079) at 16:35:00 GMT. Shortly thereafter, MODIS was transitioned to Standby Mode, the Space View Door was opened, and the scan mirror was started. There was no science production in this configuration.

An attempt was made to recover the instrument to Science Mode on Saturday, March 23rd, 2002 (2002/082) at about 01:10 GMT. The instrument was transitioned to science mode. When the A-side formatter was powered on, the expected reset errors occurred. The formatter was commanded to upload mode in order for the formatter anomaly patches to be loaded, but the formatter never stabilized in upload mode. After waiting a couple of hours for the formatter to warm itself, it was still not responding and the instrument was returned to standby mode with the scan mirror rotating.

On Tuesday afternoon, March 26th, 2002 (2002/083), upon powering the A-side Formatter, the MODIS Control Processor (CP) was able to make intermittent contact with the Formatter (FR). The MOD_SS_CP_UART_HUNT and MOD_SS_CP_UART_NORM both increased a few counts per eight second telemetry update for approximately one minute. For about one and a half minutes, the CP maintained a good serial link with the FR. The NORM counter incremented while the HUNT and RESET counters remained static. The Formatter then reset and no further communications were established that pass, even with the use of a standard FR reset command. The Formatter was turned off prior to the end of the contact.

During a second TDRS pass that afternoon, the A-side Formatter was once again powered on with the FR patch loads ready and waiting for a window of opportunity. The CP achieved intermittent contact with the FR for less than one minute, but then contact was lost with the Formatter for the rest of the contact. Three reset commands were sent before the formatter was turned off at the end of the contact. There was no stable period during which to load the formatter patches.

For the next recovery attempt, the A-side Formatter was turned on at 17:36 GMT on Wednesday, March 27th, 2002 (2002/086). Shortly thereafter, a formatter upload reset command was issued. Initially, intermittent contact was established with the formatter as the UART_HUNT and UART_NORM counters both incremented during each eight second telemetry update. After a brief period, the UART_HUNT mnemonic ceased incrementing and a good link was established with the formatter. During the time, a brief 1-word memory patch was loaded to the upload region of the formatter to prevent the errors from resetting the system. The patch was loaded a second time for redundancy.

Note: The formatter engine temperature was about -19.9C when the patches were successfully loaded.

With the formatter in a stable upload mode, the standard formatter error correction patches were loaded to the normal region of the formatter and the software was restarted. After thirty minutes of stable formatter activity in the normal mode, MODIS was transitioned to Science Mode, the SCIABNORM flag was set to ABNORM, and the Blackbody was powered on the A-side to 315K.

At approximately 19:04 GMT, the formatter was reset, thus discarding the memory load patches. The reset is believed to be due to the extended time required to log statistics of the formatter events. The extra processing time may not have allowed the formatter to reset the watchdog timer as it normally does in its background task processing.

At this point, the plan reverted to warming the instrument and then re-trying to load the patches. The Blackbody duty cycle was set to FULL and the SRCA ATC activity inhibit IDs were cleared. A couple of formatter upload reset commands were also sent as an attempt to re-establish communications without success. Then, as the A-side Formatter Engine temperature warmed to about -8C, a formatter reset command appeared to have an effect. Intermittent UART_NORM counts were observed mixed with the UART_HUNT counts. A second upload reset command was issued followed by several attempts to load the quick 1-word memory patch to the formatter upload region. The fourth such memory load was finally accepted into the formatter and a stable upload mode was achieved. The 1-word memory load to the formatter normal mode was uploaded followed by a formatter restart command.

One thing to note is that when the formatter was restarted, the formatter event messages observed in the morning were not present and the formatter was able to reliably calculate the mirror scan period. Essentially, the formatter did not appear to being bearing as much of a processing burden. After an hour of stable operations, the blackbody temperature was set to the nominal 290K and its duty cycle set to one-third.

The MODIS instrument was stable throughout the night of Wednesday, March 27th, 2002 (2002/086). The instrument cold focal planes began regulating at 83K at about 09:09 GMT. In the afternoon of March 28th, the science data "tweaks lost during the safe mode transition were restored. This included updating the band five gain values, loading a modified ideal blackbody output table, and uplinking patches to the formatter to correct a known time code problem. All of these changes were made prior to a first set of SD/SDSM calibrations while the nadir door was still closed.

The Nadir door was commanded open at about 22:53 GMT on Thursday, March 28th, 2002 (2002/087). Door movement was confirmed when the "closed" microswitch changed states from CLOSED to NOT_CLOSED, but the "open" microswitch never changed to the OPEN state. The door temperature did decrease dramatically which is a good indicator the door was opened successfully. An hour and a half later, at 00:20 GMT on March 29th, 2002 (2002/088), the Nadir door microswitch spontaneously changed state from NOT_OPEN to OPEN.

Four Solar Diffuser calibrations were performed; two prior to and two following the nadir door opening.

Upcoming plans include evaluating whether or not to write the formatter patches to EEPROM, loading a patch to the MODIS Safe Mode transition command to not turn off the formatter, and updating the currently installed formatter patches to record a count of the formatter error events.

Upcoming Week’s MODIS Events:

A control processor memory patch will be loaded to prevent the formatter from being turned off during a safe mode transition. Two formatter patches will be loaded to include error event counting and fault register bit tracking.

Maneuvers:

There will not be a MODIS Lunar Calibration at the beginning of April because the required roll angle will exceed the allowable limit.

The sixth Terra inclination maneuver has been postponed. The new date for the maneuver is not yet known but a delay of at least two weeks is expected and the maneuver will only be done if it does not interfere with any Aqua spacecraft launch activities.

The Terra Deep Space Calibration Maneuver is still postponed. The maneuver date is not expected until late summer of 2002.

MODIS Anomalies:

See description at the top of this report.

Formatter Error Events:

The current patches loaded into the MODIS Formatter do not record the number of formatter error events. Patches to count the errors are expected to be loaded next week. For data on the pre-safe mode error events, please see the link below.

The most recent error tracking spreadsheets can be retrieved from:

ftp://ftp.mcst.ssai.biz/pub/permanent/IOT/am1/analysis/FR_events/

An MS Excel spreadsheet called, AM1_FR_error_rollovers_current.xls contains the data for the times each error count "roll over" occurs.

General Instrument Comments:

MODIS is in A-side Science Mode. Both the NAD and SVD have been re-opened and fast 1-word patches have been loaded to the formatter to prevent resetting.

MODIS Telemetry Trends

The instrument has warmed to nominal temperatures. All systems appear to be functioning properly.
