BRF: Bi-directional Reflectance Factor

BW: Bandwidth

CFPA: Cold Focal Plane Assembly

Channel: each detector element

CW: Center Wavelength

DB: Direct Broadcast

DC: Digital Count

DCR: Direct Current Restore

DN: Digital Number; "Big DN". Raw signal recorded by MODIS, including SV with DCR

dn: DN corrected for electronic background (i.e., DN-SV); called "little dn"

dn*: DN corrected for instrument effects (temp., MS, RVS), SV signal subtracted; called "dn star"

dn**: For RSBs, dn* as scaled to the scaled integer (SI) within a defined dynamic range so that a single set of calibration parameters applies for every detector in a band

dn_sat: dn value at which the detector saturates

DQF: Data Quality Flags. Content of the QA LUT that describes detector status.

Ecal: Electronics calibration (detectors omitted from circuit)

EOS: Earth Observing System

Esun: RSR-weighted solar irradiance

EV: Earth View

Fire Band: MODIS Bands 21, 31, 32

FM1: Aqua satellite; Flight Model-1 (orbit crosses equator in pm)

FOS: Flight Operations Segment

FOV: Field of View

FPA: Focal Plane Assembly

FR: Formatter (component of MODIS instrument)

Frame: 1-km along scan or the length of time that the mirror scans a 1-km pixel

Frame #: 1 to 1354. Linearly related to scan angle. A cross-track (along scan) pixel.

FWHM: Full Width Half Maximum

FOT: Flight Operations Team

GIFOV: Geometric instantaneous field of view

GMT: Greenwich Mean Time (also UTC - Universal Time Coordinates, also annotated with a z for zulu)

Granule: Five minutes (a data processing time unit)

GSFC: Goddard Space Flight Center

HDF: Hierarchical Data Format

I&T: Integration and Test

IDL: Interactive Data Language

IFOV: Instantaneous Field ofView

IOT: Instrument Operations Team

IR: Infrared

L1A: Level 1A- Code (same as MOD_PR01) that unpacks the Level 0 data and reformats it into an HDF file and generates granule files

L1B: Level 1B- Code (same as MOD_PR02) that ingests L1A output and geolocation to produce radiances and reflectances

Lsat: Saturation radiance

LUT: Look-Up Table. A value or array input to the L1B code, resides in the Emissive LUT file, the Reflective LUT file, or the QA LUT file.

LWIR: Long-Wavelength InfraRed, MODIS Bands 27-36

L1B: Level 1B: calibrated, geo-located data

LSF: Line Spread Function

m1: Reflectance Calibration Linear Term (inversely proportional to detector response)

MCF: Metadata Configuration Files, e.g., identifies the satellite.

MCST: MODIS Characterization Support Team

MOD…: Indicates Terra product

MODAPS: MODIS Adaptive Processing System

MODARCH: MODIS Document Archive

MODIS: MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer

MRCN: Mirror Rotation Correlated Noise (diff. and ratios between mirror sides)

OOB: Out of Band

OOF: Out of Family; refers to a detector with unusual characteristics in the band.

PC: Photo-Conductive (detectors used for MODIS bands 31-36)

PCF: Process Control File (contains names of the MCFs; specifies inputs to L1B)

PFM: Proto Flight Model (Terra/MODIS)

PGE: Product Generation Executive (e.g., L1B = PGE02)

PGS: Product Generation System

PIQM: Processing and Instrument Quality Metadatabase

PM-1: Post Meridian EOS Platform (Aqua; orbit crosses equator ~1:30 pm)

Product order: Detector numbering convention used by the L1B code. It is the inverse of SBRS order

PV: Photo-Voltaic (detectors used for MODIS bands 1-30)

QA: Quality Assurance

QC: Quality Control

Radiance: Watts/m2/um/steradian. Depends on distance (inverse square law).

RC: Radiometric Calibration

Reflectance : rho(EV)*cos(Theta). Reflectance is the primary MODIS product. As a property of what we are viewing, it is independent of distance.

RSB: Reflective Solar Band (MODIS bands 1-19, 26, including high and low gains for bands 13 and 14)

RSR: Relative Spectral Response

R_star: Radiance Gain (linear response) Factor = Pi/(m1*Esun)

RVS: Response Vs. Scan angle

SBRS: Detector numbering convention used by Santa Barbara Research System

S/C: Spacecraft

Scan: 1.4771-second crosstrack sweep of the Earth; 1 mirror side per scan; approximately 203 scans per granule

ScMA: Scattering Measurement Assembly

SD: Solar Diffuser (screen "down" = unscreened SD)
