This Week's Scheduled MODIS Activities Not Completed:

The commands to adjust the MODIS Day/Night data rate prior to and following the lunar calibration were not scheduled properly and therefore were not sent to MODIS. See the MODIS Anomalies section below.

Maneuvers:

The next Aqua MODIS lunar calibration is planned for November 15th, 2002 with data collection from 04:38:56 to 04:45:26 and a roll angle of -9.8076 degrees.

The Deep Space Calibration pitch maneuver(s) have been indefinitely suspended pending mission review.

MODIS Anomalies:

Prior to and following each MODIS lunar calibration, the MODIS formatter rate (Day/Night) is adjusted to account for the six minutes and forty-six seconds of extra day rate data collected during the calibration. The half orbit of day rate data before and after the calibration are usually shortened by three minutes and twenty- three seconds.

Unfortunately, the changes made to this schedule for the maneuver on day 2002/289 scheduled the incorrect activities which only changed the MODIS formatter rate modelling in the ground system and did not schedule any commands to be sent to MODIS onboard the Aqua spacecraft. Therefore, the half orbit of day rate data preceding the lunar calibration were collected with the formatter in night rate. The same error would have caused the half orbit of day rate date following the maneuver to also be collected with the formatter in night rate. A Stored Command Sequence (SCS) onboard Aqua was activated to approximately correct for the missing orbit's MODIS formatter commands. The following is a general outline of the formatter events during this time:

2002/289 12:56:09 - 13:42:13 MODIS data collected at Night rate instead of Day rate
2002/289 ~14:33:30 SCS #56 activated, MODIS formatter set to Day rate
2002/289 14:38:25 MODIS formatter would have nominally been set to Day rate at this time
2002/289 ~15:22:57 SCS #56 sets MODIS formatter to Night rate
2002/289 15:24:29 MODIS formatter would have nominally been set to Night rate at this time

The MODIS commanding anomaly is still being investigated. A patch was loaded to the Aqua spacecraft on Tuesday, October 11th, 2002, to switch the MODIS ground-command timing slots with the MODIS stored- command timing slots. This transfers the risk associated with dropping commands from stored commands to real-time ground commands.

No problems have been reported since the patch was loaded and the last command drop occurred on September 2nd, 2002. The results of the patch will be evaluated for some time before the next configuration change is made. A final patch to the Aqua Bus Scheduler Task (BST) is being considered which would eliminate the timing issues to MODIS for both ground commands and stored commands.

General Instrument Comments:

FM1 MODIS is in Science Mode. The SVD and NAD are Open, the survival heaters are enabled, and the Black Body is heated to 285 K.

MODIS Telemetry Trends:

The FM1 MODIS instrument telemetry is trending nominally. The most recent radiative cooler telemetry analysis indicates significant temperature margin for the cold focal planes.
