April 19, 2003 00:00:00 GMT to April 25, 2003 00:00:00 GMT

From 15:18 GMT on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2003, until 21:32 GMT on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2003, there were slight errors associated with the Aqua MODIS sector definitions. This resulted in the earth view sector being shifted "early" by about 9 to 16 frames.

The Aqua MODIS SRCA Crosstalk calibration was performed on April 22, 2003 (2003/112). Two problems occurred during the calibration.

  1. The SRCA formatter sector delay was not set back to zero following the calibration.
  2. Incorrect values for Aqua MODIS Table 8, the MODIS sector definition start positions, were loaded during and following the calibration.

Both of these problems were corrected on April 23rd, 2003. Details of the calibration events and errors are described below.

April calibrations for the FM1 MODIS instrument include quarterly SRCA Spectral, quarterly Black Body, bimonthly PV Ecal, monthly SRCA Full Radiometric, a Lunar Calibration Roll, and weekly SD/SDSM calibrations.

May calibrations for the FM1 MODIS instrument include bimonthly SRCA Spatial, monthly SRCA Radiometric, a Lunar Calibration Roll, and weekly SD/SDSM calibrations.

Maneuvers:

The next FM1 MODIS Lunar Calibration via Spacecraft Roll Maneuver is May 12, 2003 (DOY 2003/132) with data collection from 05:55:36 to 06:02:06 GMT and a roll angle of -6.7176 degrees.

The Aqua Drag Make-up maneuver was successfully executed on April 24, 2003 at approximately 16:49 GMT.

The Deep Space Calibration pitch maneuver(s) are still postponed pending the results of the Terra Deep Space Calibration maneuvers currently planned for March 26 and April 14, 2003.

MODIS Anomalies:

Prior to the SRCA Crosstalk calibration, initial memory dumps to verify the current MODIS table and flight software values were completed at approximately 12:30 GMT on April 22, 2003; slightly later than the originally planned 11:11 GMT pass. The SRCA inhibit ID was also set at this time.

The SD/SRCA sector size changing loads and dumps were performed during the 15:11 to 15:31 GMT TDRS contact. The dump contents were verified to be what was loaded (more on this below) and the SRCA inhibit ID was cleared. In between the uplinking of the MODIS Table 7 load and the FR Operand software load, several MODIS Slow Header Generation formatter events were generated. Aqua TAXI errors were also reported at this time. The event messages ceased after the Formatter Operand memory flight software sector size adjustment load was uplinked.

The two MODIS SRCA Crosstalk Stored Command Sequences were executed between 16:01 and 18:13 GMT using 10 Watt SRCA lamps #1, #3, and #4. Unfortunately, a command was omitted (not dropped) at the end of the SCS to return the SRCA sector delay to zero. This incorrect sector delay was not a health and safety risk, nor did it affect earth view science data. The MODIS IOT had recently created and tested a procedure to be able to modify sector delays. This procedure was submitted to Aqua CM and executed on Wednesday, April 23rd at 21:29 GMT.

The first two of the three "return to nominal" memory loads were uplinked during the 18:27 to 18:47 GMT contact on April 22nd. Once again, formatter event messages were generated in the time between the two patches. The third memory load, for table 8, was not loaded during this same contact because of an operator input error into the ground system for the load file name; a zero was used in place of the letter "O". The presumed (see below) launch version of table 8 was loaded at 19:09 GMT. The memory dumps to verify these loads were conducted from 20:38 to 20:44 GMT.

The post-crosstalk calibration memory dump for table 8 matched the load contents, but did not match the original launch values. It was determined that PFM MODIS table 8 values were used to create the FM1 table 8 load files. PFM values for table 8 were also used for the earlier SRCA sector start during the crosstalk calibration. The memory dump to verify the table 8 load for during the calibration did not immediately register a problem because the dump contents did match the load values. The problem was that the load values themselves were incorrect.

MODIS' table 8 defines the start positions for the five MODIS view sectors in terms of encoder and vernier counts (clock pulses). The errors in the Aqua table 8 began at 15:18 GMT on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2003 and ended at 21:32 GMT on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2003 when the corrected Aqua MODIS table 8 was loaded to the instrument. These errors affected all of the view sectors, not just the SD and SRCA sectors that had had their sector sizes adjusted during the crosstalk calibration. The incorrect table 8 values corresponded to a 9 to 21 frame shift earlier in the Aqua view sectors versus their normal start times.

Recent SRCA calibrations have shown that SRCA lamp #2 is not producing the same output characteristics as the other SRCA 10 Watt lamps. Upcoming SRCA Full Radiometric and Full Spatial calibrations will use the backup lamp (#4) in lieu of lamp #2. The SRCA Cross Talk Calibration has also made use of this backup lamp configuration. After the data are analyzed, a decision will be made regarding which 10W lamps to use for the nominal schedule of SRCA calibrations.

The test review for the second Aqua Bus Scheduler Task (BST) patch was conducted on Wednesday, April 9, 2003. The Command Authorization Meeting (CAM) for this patch was Monday, April 14, 2003. The patch was loaded on Tuesday, April 15, 2003.

General Instrument Comments:

FM1 MODIS is in Science Mode. The SVD and NAD are Open, the survival heaters are enabled, and the Black Body is heated to 285 K.

On Thursday, April 17th, 2003 (2003/107), a one-word (16-bit) patch was loaded to the FM1 MODIS B-side Control Processor RAM at the 76th offset in Table #11. Table 11 contains lists of commands for each of the five MODIS mode transitions that are executed by sending the MOD_SET_CP_OPER_MODE command, also known as CP07.

The patch consisted of loading a value of "x0000" as a no-op command to overwrite the MOD_TURN_OFF_FR command "x1820" that would have been sent if MODIS transitioned to Safe Mode. The results of this patch is that the MODIS Formatter will remained powered if the instrument transitions to Safe Mode. This will preserve any Formatter electrical biases and any temporary flight software changes made to the Formatter (i.e. gain changes, etc.) that would otherwise have been lost if the Formatter was turned off. This patch will have no affect on MODIS operations except for transitions to Safe Mode.

The software change was to RAM and is, therefore, not permanent. The load will be lost if the MODIS Control Processor is reset or loses power. However, having this patch in place will be the nominal operating configuration throughout the remainder of the mission, and the patch will be loaded as part of any MODIS recovery from Survival Mode procedures.

MODIS Telemetry Trends:

The FM1 MODIS instrument telemetry is trending nominally and the radiative cooler temperatures have stabilized.
