This Week’s Scheduled MODIS Activities Not Completed:

None

Upcoming MODIS Events:

Calibrations for July will include biweekly SDSM and quarterly blackbody.

Maneuvers:

There will be no Lunar calibration in July 2005.

MODIS Anomalies:

At 137/01:07:30, during the 20W portion of the SRCA Full Spatial calibration, there was abnormal output from the lamps. The 20W calibration abruptly ended and neither the 10W calibration nor the 1W calibration were performed, even though the SRCA was still on. All other functions of the SRCA were working properly, including the slit and wheel movements, and the previous 30W calibration. This anomaly seems to be affecting 10W lamps #1, 3, and 4, and 1W lamp #1. From the software point of view, everything appears to have worked correctly, but the current clearly shows the anomaly. Analysis shows that the most likely cause is an overvoltage protection tripping the power to the lamps. This scenario would come about if one of the lamps failed. Since the SRCA was in radiance mode, it would then try and drive the total output of the remaining lamps to equal the radiance that should have been seen if all lamps work working nominally. This situation may cause the other lamps to fail, so the overvoltage protection steps in and shuts down all the lamps, leaving on the non-lamp functions of the SRCA to continue until the activity is complete.

To determine which lamp failed, a series of real-time procedures were executed (see above). First, the SRCA was placed into constant current mode. This allows only a steady current to the lamps, and would not over drive any if another failure happens. Next, 1W lamp #1 was tested to give a baseline for a lamp that was certain to work properly. All current and temperature telemetry was as expected. Then, 10W lamp #1 was tested, followed by 10W lamp #4. Both turned on and telemetry showed the expected currents. When 10W lamp #3 was powered on, telemetry showed that the lamp was selected, however there was no indication in either current or temperature that the lamp had turned on. This is indicative of a failed lamp. Analysis of these activities supports a 10W lamp #3 failure.

MCST has requested that the nominal SRCA calibrations be modified to operate without 10W lamp #3, limiting the SRCA’s characterization support to 20W, 10W, and 1W calibrations.

General Instrument Comments:

FM1 MODIS is in Science Mode. The SVD and NAD are Open, the survival heaters are enabled, and the Black Body is heated to 285 K.

MODIS Telemetry Trends:

The FM1 MODIS instrument telemetry is trending nominally.
