Thermal Leak (Bands 5, 6 ,7 and 26)

Description

Thermal out-of-band leakage into the SWIR Bands (5, 6,7,and 26) was evaluated by viewing the Earth at night with the MODIS instrument in day mode. Band 28 was selected to determine the leak coefficients. These coefficients were applied to mitigate the effect. The coefficients have been applied to the calculation of m1 after 12/16/2002, LUT version 4.1.1.1. Energy near 5.3 ┬Ám contributes to the SWIR bands (Bands 5, 6, 7 and 26). In June 2003, Band 25 was selected to determine the leak coefficients.

Time-dependent List of Non-Functional or Noisy Detector

Description

Prior to the Aqua MODIS launch, Band 6 exhibited several anomalous detectors. Band 6 performance degraded seriously after launch and presently a majority of the Band 6 detectors are non-functional. Averaging across dead detectors is not possible for regions on the Band where several adjacent detectors are non-functional. One band 5 and several band 6 detectors are non-functional throughout the mission. RSB detectors are declared "noisy" based on the detector-dependent SNR.

Incomplete Calibration for Band 21

Description

Band 21 calibration is imprecise at high temperatures.

Impact to L1B Data Set

This effect causes increased uncertainty in the brightness temperature due to the indirect nature of the calibration. Detector to detector striping exists, but is within specifications.

Estimated Impact to L2 Science Products

Science research will be seriously impacted until the calibration can be extended.
